Welp, my obsession with Volvos and 90 degree corners has landed me another Swedish brick in my driveway. I picked up the lovely '98 V90 with ~145k miles you see below for the measly sum of $375 (too bad I couldn't snap pics before the snow hit). Gotta love Craigslist.

Drivetrain runs very well. Interior is filthy but nothing a good cleaning won't fix. With the exception of a dent on the front of the hood, the exterior is immaculate for a 16-year-old wagon. Owner got rid of it due to a lot of small, annoying issues like power seat is stuck, shifter won't go into park, sunroof is stuck shut, tailgate won't stay up, door panel vinyl is peeling off...all very common issues on these old Volvos.

The question now is what do I do with my older '93 945 turbo. The logical thing would be to sell it and have the V90 take its place, but I have never been a very logical person.

the 945 is a far superior car in the long run to the 2.5 960/v90, though I have lust for the V90 due to it's one year only status. I LOVE the v90 interiors with the piping. That said, I think the timing belt intervals are 50K on those and I have seen numerous Aisan 6 cylinder trannies go south, or at least have issues with the S_E_W switches in them.

I think you want to hear something like this:

'Keep it.'

And so you should. There's no reason you should sell it. Maybe an LS swap?

You could flip the V90. Apply some elbow grease and wrench on it and sell it for a profit. The tailgate lifts are super easy and door vinyl may just need some fresh adhesive. If the carpet is too far gone buying new would probably be around $200, plus the time for you to install it. The sunroof issue may just be a bad fuse. Since the car will not go into park that will probably have to be professionally repaired. Run it by a transmission shop for an estimate.

I will agree the 945 is a superior car for durability and fun to drive factor. However, this is the first time I have owned an inline 6, and holy shit is it buttery smooth. I basically bought the thing for the super comfortable interior, ride, and whisper quiet interior. It'll make a great DD/road trip vehicle. My old 945 is a little rougher around the edges.

The owners manual specifies 70k timing belt service, but if it's like the modern Volvos doing it 20k early is mandatory. Timing belt has about 40k now, so I'll probably end up doing it during a massive stage-0 on the car anyway.

seats and carpet could be out in less than an hour on those. I did my seats on my 960 on the street in an hour, swapping 225K mile seats for 80K mile seats.

Haha, basically. I know it's stupid to have 2 nearly identical vehicles, but when both are worth around $1k the value of selling them doesn't come close to the value of the enjoyment I get tinkering/playing with them.

couple hour job on the front to rear oriented ones like the 960/v90, so not bad. That whole interior will swap to your 945 too if that is what you want. I am one of the biggest whiteblock 6 fans out there, but I still prefer the redblock turbos

I thought about flipping it. The shifter is a common problem. The issue is with the shifter itself and not the trans. I may be able to take apart the console and put in some shims to fix it. At the worst, I would just swap out the entire shifter. If I did that and a solid cleaning, I could easily get $1k or more for it. The problem is I get very attached to cars very quickly, and I already love this thing.

Those seats are gorgeous! Mine has the wood trim around the switches and center console not on the door panels or glove box. I like it.

Keep it, obviously. You don't want the V90 to get lonely. (I'm pretty sure Volvos are like kittens in this regard.)

Dude! What a fracking great deal!

Where are you located? That snow looks like you could be around the corner from me.

I know I had to have shown you pics of that 960, no? Ok here is all of them, at 268K miles! I bought an 80K mile one with a blown motor and robbed the wood bits, interior, 3rd seat, hydras from a 945. All kinds of stuff. I bought the car for $200 with fresh timing belt and the parts car for $400

I'm in Milwaukee. We've gotten just a couple inches of snow about every 2-3 days the last 2 weeks. This issue is when the high of the day is 0 degs F, nothing melts...ever.

Love it! That's a damn good deal...for both cars! It's very rare to see a 960 that clean.

My wife is from Milwaukee, but we're in Erie now. We had a pretty mild December, but now we've got the same situation with the snow here. Not quite 0F , but in the single digits and teens.
